DIRFT — the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal — is the UK's premier rail-connected intermodal logistics park, situated on the West Coast Main Line adjacent to Junction 18 of the M1. Home to Tesco, Sainsbury's, DHL, Eddie Stobart, Royal Mail and Malcolm Logistics among others, the estate features massive regional distribution centres spanning up to 1,000,000 sq ft under single roofs. The operational environment is uniquely dual-natured: high-density ambient, chill and cold storage automated racking systems sit alongside heavy container yards and rail-siding cross-dock lanes.
Rackstor UK Ltd provides SEMA-aligned, SARI-accredited racking inspections tailored to the intermodal freight environment at DIRFT and the surrounding NN11 logistics corridor.
Racking installations within DIRFT's cold-store RDCs (operating down to -25°C) and chill stores require specialist structural understanding. Low temperatures increase the yield strength of cold-formed steel profiles but drastically reduce material ductility, making uprights and beams more susceptible to brittle fracture under sudden MHE impact. SEMA designs for cold stores specify high-ductility steel grades and require increased structural safety margins on beam clip connections and floor anchor fixings.
Sub-slab floor heaters must prevent subsoil freezing. SEMA audits monitor column baseplates for differential movement caused by slab heave or settlement — which causes out-of-plumb deviations across tall rack runs. SEMA specifies that a rack upright must not deviate from vertical plumb by more than 1/500 of its height (20mm over a 10m frame).
Cross-docking operations involve intense powered pallet truck traffic moving goods between rail wagons, artics and storage bays. Our SARI inspectors focus on:
Under PUWER Regulation 4, any modification to a DIRFT racking structure — removing a beam level to create a low-level walk-through, installing in-rack sprinkler pipework — must be approved by a qualified racking structural engineer or SEMA-aligned manufacturer. Unapproved welding, drilling or torch-cutting of SEMA uprights immediately voids compliance and triggers prohibition notices during HSE enforcement visits.
Our inspection reports are written to BS EN 15635 and the SEMA Code of Practice. Red and amber risks are clearly prioritised so your team knows exactly what to fix and in what order.
We cover DIRFT Daventry and the surrounding NN11 logistics corridor. Written report within 48 hours of the visit.
