The Red / Amber / Green Damage System

Every fault we find is classified using the SEMA / EN 15635 traffic-light risk system. This is exactly what we look for and what each rating means for your warehouse.

GREEN — Safe

Damage within acceptable EN 15635 tolerances.

No immediate action required. Component remains in service but is logged and monitored at the next weekly PRRS check and annual inspection.

A

AMBER — Hazardous

Damage exceeds tolerance — repair within 4 weeks.

Component must be replaced or repaired within four weeks. If not actioned in time, the rating is automatically escalated to RED.

R

RED — Very Serious Risk

Offload, isolate and replace immediately.

The bay must be unloaded immediately, taken out of service and the damaged component replaced before re-loading. Continuing to use RED-rated racking is a direct HSE breach.

Failing a SEMA inspection isn't the end of the world — it's the start of a clear corrective action plan. Here's exactly what happens:

    Immediate isolation of RED items

    Any RED-rated bay is offloaded and barricaded on the day of inspection. We provide on-site signage and guidance to your team.

    Written risk-rated report

    Within 48 hours you receive a full PDF report listing every fault, its location, photos and required action — your audit-trail for HSE.

    Repair quotation

How often do you need racking inspections?

UK law and SEMA / EN 15635 set three distinct inspection frequencies that every warehouse operator must follow:

  • Daily / immediate: any operative who sees damage must report it to the PRRS straight away. No formal record required, but action is mandatory.
  • Weekly visual check: carried out by the nominated Person Responsible for Racking Safety (PRRS) and recorded in a written log.
  • Annual expert inspection: by a competent person — in practice a SEMA Approved Inspector (SARI). This is the inspection HSE will ask to see.
  • After any impact: any racking struck by an FLT or MHE must be inspected before being re-loaded — regardless of when the last annual inspection took place.

SEMA vs HSE — what's the difference?

The two are often confused but play very different roles. Both matter, and you need to understand both to stay compliant.

HSE — the regulator (the law)

The Health and Safety Executive is the UK government body that enforces workplace safety law. HSE doesn't inspect your racking itself — it sets the legal duty (Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 1998) and publishes guidance documents like HSG76. If something goes wrong, HSE investigates, prosecutes and issues fines.

SEMA — the technical standard (the how)

The Storage Equipment Manufacturers' Association is the UK trade body that sets the technical standards and trains inspectors. A SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI) is the recognised "competent person" HSE expects you to use. Their report is the document that proves you have discharged your legal duty.
