Tilbury's port and the M25's eastern corridor make Essex one of the busiest logistics counties in the South East — and one of the most inspected for racking safety compliance.
Essex's warehousing is dominated by the Port of Tilbury and the Dartford Crossing corridor, with Basildon and Harlow forming significant distribution and logistics hubs serving Greater London's eastern approaches.
We regularly inspect racking installations across Essex, including in:
The legal test is not the size of a Essex warehouse or the number of bays. If employees use pallet racking as work equipment, PUWER 1998 requires the employer to manage its condition and arrange competent inspection at suitable intervals. HSE publication HSG76 recommends a formal expert inspection at least annually, supported by routine visual checks and a reporting system for impact damage. A documented report is therefore part of an evidence trail, not simply a maintenance shopping list.
The traffic-light categories turn measurements into an action plan. Green remains under observation, amber requires controlled off-loading and repair, and red requires immediate isolation:

Basildon, Harlow and Chelmsford support large distribution and manufacturing estates, while Grays and the lower Thames area connect with port and crossing traffic. Colchester and Southend add regional warehouses, producing a county-wide mix of high-volume pallet storage and smaller trade premises.
Port-centred logistics at London Gateway and Tilbury supports major Thames Estuary warehousing along the M25 and A13. Basildon, Harlow and Chelmsford sit alongside Tilbury within this strategic Essex distribution network.
The survey covers the eight safety-critical categories in our SEMA racking inspection checklist, including frames, beams, connections, bracing, baseplates, floor fixings, protection and load notices. The main SEMA racking inspection guide explains the measurement method and tolerances in full.
An Essex inspection can be sequenced around loading peaks and shift changes, particularly on large sites near the M25 or lower Thames. The site should identify restricted aisles, external stores and recent rack alterations before the visit so the survey covers the complete installation.
The report uses local aisle and bay references, not a generic defect count. This is important where several similar blocks of racking occupy one Basildon or Harlow warehouse: the photographs and location schedule allow urgent bays to be found and controlled without delay.
We train PRRS candidates across Essex as part of the same programme as our annual expert inspections. Booking both together means your nominated person is trained on the findings from your own report — the real damage on your own racking — rather than on generic examples. Sessions in and around Basildon are normally offered within a fortnight of enquiry.
See weekly PRRS training for what the course covers, or the PRRS training guide for the full syllabus and booking detail.
